“I’m reading through the portions of the prayers I have memorized (the Trisagion, The Lord’s Prayer, ‘it is truly meet…’, Gladsome Light, etc.) I often stumble as my brain is already reciting the version I know while my eyes are reading a version with very different wording.”
My challenge with every single prayer book I’ve gotten since the little red Antiochian prayer book I first learned with. I’m super particular and it just throws me off when things are different. Undoubtedly just my own neurosis here, it’s frustrating to be sure.
I bought mine when it first came out. Sadly, even with the videos, I just can't get the gang of the book. It is a nice volume - perhaps I will get it to work someday.
I honestly found the best way was to use the normal prayer services and JUST the Octoechos. For the longest time I just did every service as an "ordinary" one until I cycled through the 8 tones a few times and got the hang of weaving them in. Slowly tied in other ones after that; it's much easier once you have the habit of seeing each part of the book and developing some muscle memory flipping back and forth.

Wait…are you trying to tell me something? Seems ominous…
Memento Mori!
